The Preppers Checklist - Are You Ready?

This idea comes from Ragnar Bensons "The Survival Retreat", (very highly recommended).        GO

I have adapted the checklist so it can be printed out, and used to objectively analyze your ideas. I have gone a step further and included both "Urban" , and "Rural" breakdowns to better target specific areas.

Print this list and use it as your own progress report card.

Use this list to be objective about your plans - we all tend to see things in our own unique perspective, so these lists help clarify the view.

There are no "right" or "wrong" answers here.

You may have some "NO"'s. Thats OK.  Use those "No's" to point out how you could improve things, or maybe they just don't apply to you. Everyone must live or die by that determination.

Note that these were written for "Bugging Out" to a separate location, however, they also apply if you are planning to "Bug In" , your retreat location is simply your own home in that case...

The RURAL checklist:

Will your plan A (Bug In) or Plan B (Bug Out) location, hold all of the people who are likely to show up to use it?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is it Concrete, stone, dirt?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is it Wood or some other flammable material?  (not desirable)

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is the roof metal, tile, or slate?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is the roof asphalt shingle? Cedar shake? (not desirable)

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is a portion below ground at least 4 ft?

Is water available nearby or inside (not municipal supply)

Do I have the skills to preserve food (meat, fish, berries, fruit)

Do I know at least 10 plants that grow nearby that can be eaten?

Can the retreat area be heated? (is it enclosed and weathertight?)

Do I have a means to heat it? (fireplace, stove, campfire?)

Do I have means to cook with heat? (mess kits, pans, pots?)

Can I safely store food, ammunition, weapons in the retreat when I do not occupy it? (can it be secured prior to occupation?)

Does it have adequate sanitary facilities? Is there enough water to wash? What about toilet facilities?

Is the location hidden from view Now?

Can the location be hidden from view when occupied?

Can access to the location be cut off by barricades, wires?

Does anyone else, other than those utilizing the retreat, know that it exists?

Is it likely that some people will also try to use this retreat?

Do you have a workable defense plan already made up for this retreat?

Will your defense plan require more than 50% of your people in the retreat?

Can you patrol the area and keep it clear?

Can you prevent your retreat from being firebombed?

Do you have control of the likely approaches? Do you have a plan for each approach?

Do I have enough equipment to defend, patrol, and barricade the retreat?

Can I raise a garden in safety, grow vegetables, raise animals?

Can I ‘grow’ into the retreat, or will I outgrow it by adding people?

Do I have a library of knowledge that can be accessed by others?

Do I have enough medical supplies to address: severe burns?, bullet wounds?, amputations?, broken arms and legs?

Do I have any anesthetics? Alcohol? Cloves?

Do I have any NBC masks, suits?

Do I have any decontamination kits for radiation? A civil defense meter or dosimeter?

Do I have plans to divert people away from the retreat?, Keep them away? What about refugees, women, children?

Do I really know the capabilities of the people that will be sharing the retreat with me?

Do I really intend to shoot intruders? What if they are unarmed? Can the people sharing the retreat shoot intruders?

Does everyone know the pass phrase that triggers a bugout or bugin? Do they know what to do without using the phone to confirm anything?

Do I have a stock of items to barter with? Do I know the intended value? Would a person receiving the barter item know what it is worth?

Do I know how everyone intends to get to the retreat? Does everyone have multiple ways in?

Is there a prearranged meeting spot outside and away from the retreat to prevent being discovered?

Do I know how much time it will take to: reach the retreat? Close off access? Secure the area?

Do I know, and those involved know, the warning signs that will put them on alert to be ready to go?

Are my weapons designed to maximize efficiency by being the right weapon for the right job? Do I know this?

Do I have a plan for communications once at the retreat? How about with people on the way in?

Have I looked at the retreat from an intruders point of view? Have I analyzed what they might do to get in? Can I counter this?

Do I have a Psyops plan in coordination with a defense plan?

Does the group have any special medical issues? Have I provided for them (diabetes, high BP, etc.)?

Can I : improvise an explosive? Reload ammunition? Rig a boobytrap? Clean a weapon? Teach others to do these things?

Do I have other transportation skills that I could use? Do others in the group? Pilot? CDL? Engineer?

Am I confident in the groups abilities right now? Do I trust every one of them?

Do I, or someone in the group, know the territory intimately?

Do I have tools, hardware, utensils that will make life much easier? Axes, crowbars, saws, pulleys, rope etc.

Do  have a plan to continue stocking supplies while in the retreat?, or am I now cutoff?

Do I have a specific plan to deal with fire? Explosion?

Can people sneak up on the retreat from a hidden area? Have you identified any such areas? Do you have specific plans for these areas?

Is there adequate ventilation for oxygen, smoke?

I have left some empty lines for you to add other observations.

The urban prepper faces the same basic elements, but has to have a different solution for them than the Rural prepper.

How we meet the 7 basics is the difference between us.

No matter how we intend to bunker down, in the city or in the country , we need light, heat, water, food, shelter, communications, and security.

The URBAN checklist:

Will your plan A (Bug In) or Plan B (Bug Out) location, hold all of the people who are likely to show up to use it?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is it Concrete, stone ?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is it Wood or some other flammable material?  (not desirable)

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is the roof metal, tile, or slate?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Are you on the top floors of an apartment? (not desirable)

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is the roof flat? Close to another roof?

Hazard By Hazard Analysis:  Is your retreat on the street level, or below street level? (not desirable)

Where will you obtain water? Do you have ½ gal/person /day supply for at least 60 days? (15 gallons/month min./person) (these are absolute minimums)

 Do you have adequate food stocks? (Minimum 2 cans/person/day – 60 days) that’s 60 cans/ month/person

Can the retreat area be heated? (is it enclosed and weathertight?)

Do I have a means to heat it? Or can I retain heat in it?

Do I have means to cook with heat? (mess kits, pans, pots?) (how will you cook?)

If in another building or structure - Can I safely store food, ammunition, weapons in the retreat when I do not occupy it? (can it be secured prior to occupation?)

Does it have adequate sanitary facilities? Is there enough water to wash? What about toilet facilities?

Can access to the location be cut off by barricades? wires? Glass? Vehicles?

If relocating - Is it likely that some people will also try to use this retreat?

Do you have a workable defense plan already made up for this retreat?

Will your defense plan require more than 50% of your people in the retreat?

Can you patrol the area and keep it clear? (rooftop accessible?)

Can you prevent your retreat from being firebombed at the street level?

Do you have control of the likely approaches? Do you have a plan for each approach?

Do I have enough equipment to defend, patrol, and barricade the retreat? The apartment entrances, windows? The street around it?

Can I raid empty units for food and supplies?

Can I ‘grow’ into the retreat, or will I outgrow it by adding people?
